PRE-VISUALIZATION

As a final project in my set decorating class at UNCSA, we were asked to design a two-wall set in any style of our choosing.

I was drawn to using primary colors, as well as wanting to expand into a more avant garde style of decorating. I was inspired by surrealist art and how artists of the time focused on different aspects of life; such as death, the passing of time, or self-perception.

We had to build our sets in the lobby of one of our class buildings on the UNCSA campus. This came with unique challenges, but was ultimately a success.

The design changed a lot over the course of the construction and installation period. But, at the start of the project, I created a 3D model in SketchUp to help layout the furniture and figure out colors.

PRODUCTION

After painting the walls yellow, I needed to add the mural of veins. I started by mapping out the thickest lines then adding in the smaller ones to fill the gaps.

I also had to create several large, 3D organs for the wall. I created a liver, a stomach, a heart, and a pair of lungs.

I started by creating a cardboard base for the shape. Then, I added crumped newspaper to give it some depth, and then finally did several layers of
papier-mâché.

They each got a coat of red paint along with some pink dry brushing to bring out the texture of the paper and add variety.
